What a difference a year makes. This time 12 months ago Seth Rogen was being talked up as something of a comedy messiah following excellent turns in Knocked Up and Superbad. Since then the cuddly Canadian has suffered from the law of diminishing returns: Pineapple Express had its moments, with Rogen on safe, stoner-geek territory, while Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno was a passable sex comedy. Yet there was always the feeling that the actor was taking on too many projects, and was likely to come a cropper sooner rather than later.Observe and Report looks like just that. It features Rogen as a shopping mall security guard charged with tracking down a flasher who has been upsetting gorgeous co-worker Brandi (Anna Faris). Written and directed by The Foot Fist Way’s Jody Hill, it also stars Ray Liotta as a police detective investigating the same crime. It’s always hard to gauge a movie by the trailer alone, but one has to assume that a three-minute long promo is going to include many of the final flick’s funniest moments, and there isn’t a lot to laugh at here. Rogen looks bored, and the storyline appears basic and ill-considered, although the wonderful Faris manages her usual trick of transforming dull, leaden lines into comedy gold.Superbad, which Rogen penned himself with childhood pal Evan Goldberg, was apparently more than a decade in the writing – the pair began working on it when they were in their teens – so its perhaps unsurprising that subsequent outings have dipped in quality. Even so it’s a pity to see an actor who so recently could apparently do no wrong slip so quickly into the Hollywood mire.Source: guardian.co.uk |
