When it was announced that actor-director Stephen Chow would be dropping out of Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s adaptation of the classic radio serial The Green Hornet, many questioned whether this might be the final nail in the coffin of a production already beleaguered by a number of setbacks.

Gondry was offered the director’s chair following Chow’s departure, but that still left the hero without his trusty sidekick, Kato (famously portrayed by Bruce Lee in the ’60s TV show). Enter Jay Chou, an award-winning musician, singer, producer, actor, and director from Taiwan, most widely known in the U.S. for his appearance in Curse of the Golden Flower.

In a recent interview with Channel News Asia, Chou said there were a number of reasons why he simply “had to” take the role of Kato.

It’s a role that Bruce Lee once played, plus it’s a positive Asian role which is rare in Hollywood. Anyway, I went to Hollywood not just to make it big and develop my film career. I went there to also introduce my music to the Americans. So that they will notice me.

In a separate interview with The Star Online, Chou said that he had fun working on The Green Hornet, but that the Hollywood-style production tried his patience.

In Asia, we get through a movie very quickly. We get the script, we get working and it’s done. In Hollywood, they have rehearsals that go on for half a month before they begin shooting and shooting can go on for months.

The Green Hornet was adapted for the screen by Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg. The movie also stars Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, Edward Furlong, and Edward James Olmos. (Source)

The Huffington Post has released their Top 10 Films of 2009 list. Surprising to many, “Observe and Report” made the list! Below is what they had to say:

7. “Observe and Report”
Where have all the Travis Bickles gone? Quick answer — the shopping mall. And if you got behind (me Satan), or rather, director writer Jody Hill’s subversive, hilarious, weirdly poignant and almost horrifyingly timely Observe and Report, you’ll see Travis, not only as a power-hungry security guard in the form of a schlubbier Seth Rogen, but also as a regular Joe consumer. He might be traversing the food court or staring at the ice skaters in the center rink or wondering if he can afford a flat-screen TV while making his mortgage payment, but he’s there, facing down all of that cheaply made fast food, recycled air and overpriced merchandise. He’s killing time and, to become even more of a downer here, he’s killing his soul. Yes, he’s killing his soul at…Cinnabon. It’s funny and yet it’s not. It’s heartbreakingly sad. And weirdly joyful (especially in a heroin moment. That’s right, a shooting-up heroin moment). It was also one of the bravest, most underrated movies of the year. One day it will be considered a classic.

Movieweb.com compiled a list of the “Best Films of the Decade (2000-2009).” The list included both audience pick and critics pick.

Aught Blog Critic’s Pick for 2005? The Forty Year Old Virgin.
Directed by Judd Apatow, this R rated comedy went on to earn $109 million at the box office. With the PG-13 rating dominating the early part of the Aughts, Apatow created a smart and intelligent adult sitcom that revolved around real human themes and emotions. In one fail swoop, he proved that an R rated comedy could still cash in at the box office. This one flick kick-started far too many careers to count, including Paul Rudd’s, Steve Carell’s, Seth Rogen’s, and Jane Lynch’s. Not to mention creating a brand name out of the last name Apatow. While many similar films have followed in its footsteps, no other comedy has meant as much to this decade as The Forty Year Old Virgin.

Aught Blog Critic’s Pick for 2007? Superbad.
Directed by Greg Mottola, this Judd Apatow produced comedy went on to earn $121 million at the box office. It also proved to be the funniest film of the entire decade. Earning more laughs per minute than any other film made in the last ten years, Superbad redefined vulgarity and the use of profanity for laughter’s sake. It also upheld its human relationships, centering itself on the true bond of friendship. It’s a one of a kind movie miracle that doesn’t happen very often. And it’s still heralded as the greatest teen flick of all time, besting even John Hughes’ epic entries in the genre.

Newsblaze.com complied their list of the “1 Worst Films of 2009″ stating: To land on this 10 Worst List, a movie has to be more than merely disappointing. No, it must be walk-out bad, except that my job as a film critic is to sit there and watch it anyway, and simply be subjected to the torture. Sometimes, a film turns out to be so awful that it’s actually funny, but that doesn’t count as a miserable enough experience to warrant inclusion here. No, these flicks are the ones with no redeeming qualities which left me savoring this opportunity to get even.

3. Observe and Report
Seth Rogen stars in this raunchy teensploit, a relentlessly-dark and disturbing celebration of depravity unlikely to resonate with any decent demographic. Director Jody Hill ostensibly decided to up the ante in terms of the shock genre’s profane, prurient and politically-incorrect index.

‘The subject-matter mined for laughs here includes drug addiction, date rape, stun gun tasering, stalking, bullying, stealing, sexual assault, abusive relationships, ethnic, gender and sexual preference slurs, and prolonged, full-frontal nudity. And despite pushing the envelope, the film breaks a cardinal rule of comedy by failing to be funny.

Most of the offensive antics involve the head of security (Rogen) at the Forest Ridge Mall where a lowlight includes an exchange between the foul-mouthed protagonist and a suspected terrorist named Saddamn Hussein (Aziz Ansari) during which they take turns yelling “[Expletive] you!” back and forth at each other dozens of times. But the movie’s most offensive moment has to be the chase scene featuring lingering, slow-motion shots of a flasher’s family jewels in all their glory.

I suppose this movie could’ve been worse. I’m just not sure how.

The Green Hornet
Opens: December 22nd 2010
Cast: Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Jay Chou, Edward James Olmos, Christoph Waltz
Director: Michel Gondry

Summary: Britt Reid is a wealthy industrialist by day. At night though he goes out in his masked “Green Hornet” identity to fight crime as a vigilante, accompanied by his similarly masked Asian manservant Kato who drives a car equipped with advanced technology.

Analysis: Over the years several have tried to turn the radio, and later TV serial hero into a feature film – despite the box-office and critical failure of Russell Mulcahy’s 1994 take on the similarly originating “The Shadow”. Things really didn’t heat up though until 2004 when Kevin Smith became attached to pen and direct a film about ‘Hornet’ with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jet Li possibly starring. The project however became stuck in development hell and Smith left it in 2006.

Two years on Sony announced a ‘Hornet’ film with “Knocked Up” star Rogen in the title role and Hong Kong action/comedy star Stephen Chow directing and playing Kato. Chow ultimately left the project, but his replacement came in the form of acclaimed director Michel Gondry (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Be Kind Rewind”). Taiwanese singer and actor Jay Chou became Kato, while the villain originally slated to be Nicolas Cage became “Inglourious Basterds” bad guy Christoph Waltz.

Originally this sounded like a good spoof of the superhero genre by scribes Rogen and Evan Goldberg who previously penned 2007′s “Superbad” and 2008′s “Pineapple Express”, easily the best films released by Judd Apatow’s production banner. The hiring of Gondry though has reset expectations even higher as he’s come in with a take on the material that the writers immediately loved and the studio execs got a tad nervous about. A lot will depend on the trailers which should give us a better idea of what to expect, while a strong launch at Comic Con in July could also have a big impact.

We’ve come to the end of 2009, so we thought we’d weigh in with a look back at the first 10 years of the 21st century in the movie world and discuss the various different “events” which shaped the decade.

10. The Rise of “The Apatow Comedy”
Judd Apatow is a producer who’s actually been working since the 90s (did you know he produced the Jim Carrey dark comedy, The Cable Guy, for instance?) but it was in 2005 that we started to see the emergence of “the Apatow comedy,” thanks in large part to The 40 Year Old Virgin. It was a truly hilarious film (I can’t remember ever laughing that much in a theater) but also one with a lot of heart and relatability. Sure, you had your crude sex jokes, but you also had a sweet story at the center, brought to life particularly well by stars Steve Carell and Catherine Keener.

The 40 Year Old Virgin was a smash hit, and it led to a slew of comedies from the Apatow camp, even if (as some people often forget) Apatow himself didn’t direct most of them. Superbad, Knocked Up, Funny People, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story – all big hits with audiences. I don’t personally find all of his movies as hilarious as most people do, but there’s no denying the impact his style has had on the comedy genre. For instance, you’ll often hear people say, “It wasn’t as funny as [insert Apatow comedy here].” And I don’t see any sign of the Apatow comedy train slowing down anytime soon.

That Warm Glow has made a list of the top 10 “best brilliant-but-canceled too soon shows of the decade” the ones that should have become huge hits but never did. (“Freaks and Geeks” is not eligible, started before 2000):

4. “Undeclared” (Fox, 2001)
Seth Rogen. Jason Segel. Judd Apatow. Guest stars Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller. How in the world did this series fail? Probably because Fox never promoted it. Comedy was dead after 9/11, remember? The series followed the wacky hijinks of a group of college freshmen, and for a few short months it was the funniest thing on TV. Instead of going the “American Pie”-model sex/gross-out comedy route, the show was actually fairly realistic, finding humor in the stresses and emotional turmoil (and, OK, potty humor) that defines the college years. Who didn’t know guys just like Marshall and Ron (Timm Sharp and Rogen) in college? There were so many high points: Loudon Wainright III as the dad who wants to be one of the guys; the pre-”Sons of Anarchy” Charlie Hunnam (he’s British!) as a pretty-boy drama student; and my favorite character, Perry (whatever happened to Jarrett Grode?), the deadpan, sarcastic guy who stole every scene he was in and could break into freestyle rap at the drop of a hat. It had witty, razor-sharp dialogue, was consistently hilarious and heartfelt and a stars-of-tomorrow cast. Of course it was doomed to fail.

British actor Simon Pegg had been forced to pull out of Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie, Inglourious Basterds alongside Brad Pitt. Pegg was forced to pull out of the project because it clashes with the filming of his movie Paul which features, Seth Rogen.

A spokesman for the star says, “Unfortunately, the schedule overlaps with another film Simon is already committed to.”
