Some people seem to turn Halloween into a mega-experience — big parties, big costumes, big times. Then there’s Seth Rogen. For him, the holiday just meant lots of chocolate and television.
“I had a lot of allergies when I was a kid and I couldn’t eat sugar very often,” Rogen recalled. “So for me, Halloween was just a day to gorge myself.
He also savored ABC’s Friday comedies “because I was a nerd and had nothing to do on Friday nights. Their Halloween episodes … always spawned some good comedy.”
So it’s logical that Rogen is now a star of the newest Halloween special, “Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space.” It’s in a week stuffed with Halloween shows.
How stuffed? Well, at 8 p.m. today, two cartoons collide, with “Monsters” on NBC and Charlie Brown on ABC. Both shows run twice this year — ABC’s ran on Tuesday and repeats today, NBC’s at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. today. And cable counters with piles of Halloween movies. All of this makes sense to Rogen, who seems less excited about the costumes-and-parties part.
“I have a girlfriend now and I’ve entered the unfortunate world of paired costuming,” he said. “I always end up being the lamer half …. like she’s a dog and I’m a fire hydrant.”
More often, he’s busy doing or watching comedy; voice work fits neatly. “I like to work a lot and one thing with animation is they can really schedule it around you.”
He’s been working for more than half his 27 years, thanks to liberal parents in Vancouver. “I started doing stand-up (comedy) when I was 13,” Rogen said. “My mom would drive me to all the shows and not be upset when I had to miss school the next day.”
Straight from high school, he went to Hollywood and landed supporting roles in two TV series — “Freaks and Geeks” and “Undeclared” — produced by Judd Apatow. Then came Apatow movies — “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up,” “Superbad,” “Pineapple Express,” “Step Brothers,” “Funny People” — and some writing. Now Rogen is busy on “The Green Hornet” (as producer, writer and star), while squeezing in animated work on the side.
He liked cartoon movies as a kid, but they seemed “more female-skewed.” Then he saw “Shrek” and was a fan. “It seemed more cynical, almost, in a humorous way … just kind of a skewed perspective.”
Rogen had small roles in animated films (including “Shrek 3”), then campaigned for the “Monsters vs. Aliens” role as B.O.B., the enormous blue blob. Now he repeats that role in the NBC special, which has outer-space aliens slipping into Earth while people are trick-or-treating; it can be part of a Halloween week built around TV and candy.

Seth Rogen’s happy to finally be filming “The Green Hornet.”
“‘Green Hornet’ is everything I imagined and more,” Rogen told reporters Thursday evening, adding that even though the production, which spent years in development, has begun, “we still gotta make it awesome.”
Rogen said that because he’s a writer, producer and star on “Green Hornet,” he’s feeling the pressure to make it great. Seth Rogen shoots “The Green Hornet.”
“I will blame Gondry if it sucks though,” he joked. “I take a huge amount of the pressure. I understand that it’s my face on it when it comes out even if it sucks for another reason people will blame me. That’s why I have to be so involved to try to make sure that it doesn’t suck. I’ve been talking about this movie for years, and if it sucks no one will be more disappointed than me, believe me.”
Rogen was promoting his Halloween special, “Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space,” in which he again voices B.O.B. the blob, but he revealed some news about “Green Hornet.”
“Edward Furlong is in the movie, yes,” Rogen said, confirming a report in People a few weeks ago. He remained tight-lipped about what character the “Terminator 2″ actor plays. “That I can’t reveal.”
Rogen also spoke about how the metal band Anvil ended up in the film.
“Well, as a Canadian hard rock fan, I actually have known about Anvil for many, many years,” Rogen said. “We needed a band for a scene in the movie and [director Michel] Gondry was like, ‘How about Anvil?’ and we asked them and they said yes.”
The animated “Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space” airs at 7 p.m. Oct. 28. I’ll have more from Rogen on the special in a few days.

Everyone loves a great underdog story (Rudy! Rudy!); and the story of Canadian heavy metal band Anvil is one of the better ones we’ve seen as of late. Their documentary, Anvil! The Story of Anvil has received almost purely raving reviews (98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), and has re-entered the band into the public eye, where they surely deserve to be.
In their re-acquired fame, the band — consisting of Steve Kudlow, Robb Reiner, and Glenn Five — have found themselves playing festivals and shows again, recording a new album, and appearing on many different popular talk shows. Better yet, they’ve apparently even netted themselves another movie gig: a cameo appearance in Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet adaptation. As it turns out, Gondry is one of the many fans of the band and brought them in to film a brief scene where they actually explode while playing a rock club — likely to be the work of a villain that the Hornet will have to pursue and apprehend.
Even more good news for the band: The Story of Anvil is now officially the very first screener to be sent out to the Academy of Motion Picture Science’s 6,000 voters for Oscar consideration. This honor has been share by movies like Little Miss Sunshine, Junebug, and Frozen River — all of which went on to considerable success in their award runs.
The movie documents the band’s story in full, their highs and lows, all with interviews with members of huge bands in music like Metallica, Guns ‘N Roses, and Slayer talking about how much Anvil inspired them to do what they do.

He is used to playing the funny fat man, but now Seth Rogen has turned into the super hero. The Knocked Up actor has trimmed down his waistline to shoot the lead role in The Green Hornet. Seth first began losing weight last year for the role, but rewrites, director and casting changes have all had the project on ice until now. The actor, who also wrote the screenplay, was filming in a rock quarry in Los Angeles with Jay Chou, who plays his trusty sidekick Kato.
The Green Hornet is a big screen version of the 1960s TV show, which starred Bruce Lee as Kato, and also stars Cameron Diaz as a reporter and Britt Reid’s (aka The Green Hornet) love interest. But despite looking much slimmer, trimmer and healthier for the role, Rigen revealed he felt like a ‘sell out’ for losing the weight.
‘I’ve been eating better and training – and hating myself for it. I feel like a sell out, I feel lame, I feel like a guy I would make fun of,’ he said.
He said he lost weight by eating well and exercising with a personal trainer.
‘I go there real early in the morning,’ he added. ‘He tells me what to do, and I go home and go to sleep, and it’s like it never even happened.’
He needs to be fit for the role as in an interview last April, he claimed he would be doing all his own stunts.
The Green Hornet, who happens to be the Lone Ranger’s grand-nephew, is a newspaper publisher by day who fights crime by night accompanied by Kato. He drives a car with advanced technology called Black Beauty, and has brilliant hand-to-hand combat skills. In the TV series he was armed with a sonic blast weapon called the Hornet’s Sting, and in many versions he carries a gun that sprays knock-out gas. The film, directed by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’s Michel Gondry, takes ideas from both the original radio programme in the 1930s, the 60s TV show and comic book series.
